Normal mode form of the SWE:

• Use the Hough mode form of the equations;

• Make a control run to generate the climate;

• Linearize the Hough mode equations including the climate mean flow;

• Generate normal modes from this linearized system.

• Using these modes, generate a new spectral model.

• Split this model into fast and slow components based on the frequencies determined;

• Use the leap-frog and multi-level schemes to integrate the slow components and balance the fast modes.
