The GCIP/GAPP SRB
product, as available since January 1, 1996, is provided at the
University of Maryland Web site: http://atmos.umd.edu/~srb/gcip/
|
03/15/2001
|
Initially,
it was produced at NOAA/NESDIS as a real time, experimental product. |
03/15/2001
|
Starting July 2000,
the product became "operational" at NOAA/NESDIS. From that time,
two products are run at NOAA/NESDIS in parallel:
a. operational, and
b. experimental
|
04/01/2001
|
Till
April 1, 2001, both products were the same. Presently, the experimental
product is being used for testing modifications and improvements.

|
To
ensure that the users are receiving a consistent product, starting
April 1, 2001, the University of Maryland Archive (http://atmos.umd.edu/~srb/gcip/)
is providing SRB information as produced with the operational version. |
04/01/2001
|
The
University of Maryland is archiving both products (operational and
experimental), for evaluation purposes. |
06/07/2001
|
Starting
from Jun 7, 2001, results from evaluation of Photosynthetically
Active Radiation (PAR) against the SURFRAD
observations have been added. |
06/10/2001
|
Work
is in progress to provide real time validation of the surface temperature
SRB product. |

The NOAA/NESDIS operational system (OPS) has been upgraded as of
13Z on 20 June 2001. The upgrade includes an expanded domain (24-54
N, 126-66 W) from (25-50 N, 125-70 W) and calibration updates as
described at:
http://www.oso.noaa.gov/goes/goes-calibration/vicarious-calibration.htm

|
On July 1-2, 2001, the NOAA server that holds the operational SRB
product, was down and data were lost. These two day's data were
replaced with experimental run. |

During the 2002 - 2003 period, several problems related to snow
information transfer to the NOAA/NESDIS GCIP SRB operational model
were encountered. Initially, the snow field as it existed in February
2002, was not updated till the middle of August 2002. Subsequently,
the transfer of information on snow to the radiation model encountered
technical problems. Therefore, the satellite based estimates of
surface radiative fluxes in snow covered areas will be in error.
This snow problem at NOAA was fixed on March 17, 2003 at 18:15 Z.

|
On April 1, 2003, GOES-8 was replaced by GOES-12. As yet, the system has not
been fully debugged and starting April 1, 2003, the GCIP SRB data
have problems. The users will be updated when the problem is resolved.
Warning removed on 09/01/2003. |

Snow unit problem in 1997
The inference
scheme to derive surface radiative fluxes during snow season,
requires information on snow extent in each grid box in %. On
Julian day 104, 1997 at 18z, the snow were mistakenly changed
to tenth of an inch. It was switched back to % on Julian day 262,
1997.
The following steps were taken at the University of Maryland:
- replaced the
snow data to the required unit
- reprocessed the
period from April to August of 1997
- the radiative
fluxes as derived with the wrong unit were replaced with the
correct ones at this web site
|
10/12/2003
|
Starting September
1, 2003, the transfer of processing to GOES-12 images has been
made, and the earlier warning during the transition period is
now removed.
|

|
Daily average shortwave
downward flux for previous day and a one week animation of daily
values have been added.

Recently, we have
switched from a Unix to Linux operating system. This caused delay
in activating the new FTP site data delivery. To minimize inconvenience
to users, temporary access to data was provided via an HTTP site.
This required manual download. We are pleased to let you know
that the data can again be downloaded via an anonymous FTP site
ftp://metosrv6.umd.edu/pub/srb/gcip/ . Please use "anonymous"
as your username and your email address as your password when
"ftp metosrv6.umd.edu" . After logging in, you can change
directory to "/pub/srb/gcip/" to download data.
Due to space limitations
on our FTP site, only the deg_1/2 reprocessed data have been placed
there.
The deg_1/8 reprocessed
data are not on the FTP site, yet they can be obtained from the
HTTP website using Mozilla browser.

Due to maneuver of GOES-12 there was a disruption in the operation of the
satellite from 12/04/2007 to 12/17/2007.
During this period observations from GOES 10 replaced the missing data from GOES-12.
As a results, there was a gap in data over the southwest of US continent.

Warning:
In recent days GOES-12 developed problems due to thruster failure. This is affecting the quality of the SRB product. A notice will be posted when this problem is resolved. Warning removed on 1/26/2009. |
