Known Problems
It was demonstrated that for cells where a denser network of ground
observing stations was available, the RMS error was drastically
reduced (Whitlock et al., 1993; Pinker et al., 1994; Rossow,
private communication; Laszlo, 1996 (Figure 9)).
The quality of the ground observations is not of a uniform nature.
The used data have been quality controlled under the Global Energy Budget Archive (GEBA) activity, and
it is believed that major errors have been removed.
The distribution of the satellite observations that enter into the
computation of the surface fluxes is not uniform, as evident from
Figure 10. This will have an impact on the magnitude of the error,
when compared to ground truth.
