Project 3: Optimum Realization Statistics

• Purpose:

  • To reduce the number of realizations required for obtaining meaningful climate predictions.
  • Thereby to save computing time for more predictions.

• Methods

  • Expand model data in structures containing both amplitude and phase.
  • Try EOFs
  • Try Eigenstructures (Assoc. Leg. Polys.)

• General Observations

  • Amplitudes tend to be much less variable than phase
  • If so, perhaps fewer realizations of amplitude may be needed for meaningful predictions
  • If amplitude provides useful prediction information, computing time can be saved
