BackgroundThe long term goal of CEOP is to use enhanced observations to better document and simulate water and energy fluxes over land and reservoirs on diurnal to annual scales, to better predict these fluxes on temporal up to seasonal scales for water resource applications, to understand how land plays a role in the overall climate system, and what is the seasonal variation of the monsoon systems. The focus of CEOP is on the GEWEX Continental Scale Experiments (CSEs); that originally included the Mississippi River Basin, the Baltic Sea Basin, Amazon River Basin, parts of Saskatchewan, Eastern Asia, and Central Africa. More recently additional activities have been added such as the Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) as well as cold regions, high elevations, monsoons, and semi-arid regions. This framework allows to test transferability of techniques and models between different climatic regions, and to predict water-related parameters at scales suitable for assimilation into Numerical Weather Prediction Models (NWP). CEOP will also provide an opportunity to evaluate the usefulness of ongoing operational satellites and new generation of experimental satellites in hydrological research.
